Good Grief

Another Peanuts’ legend has passed away. Animator, and also the voice of Snoopy, Bill Melendez died earlier this week at the age of 91. Melendez began his career at Disney where he worked on Bambi and was the only animator that Peanuts’ creator Charles Shultz trusted to bring his characters to life.

Busy As A Bull

Acclaimed film director Guillermo Del Toro is a busy, busy man. Thanks to long-term deals with Universal, the Hellboy director has projects booked solid until 2017. Del Toro has the option to do remakes of Universal classics Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde, Frankenstein, and Kurt Vonnegut's classic Slaughter House 5. Other potential projects for Del Toro is a film version of H.P. Lovecraft's At The Mountains Of Madness. We're particularly excited about that one...maybe then someone will finally do a good HP Lovecraft movie. And of course don't forget that Guillermo Del Toro is currently at work on The Hobbit, the prequel to The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Can't wait for that one. But what about Hellboy 3? Del Toro says that a third film has yet to be confirmed as studio execs wait to see how Hellboy II fares overseas.

Cinefile

How complete is your DVD collection? Do you have all 90,000 of them? That's right. Apparently, by the end of the year, there will be 90,000 DVDs available on the market. Though we suspect that at least half of them are the various special editions of Army Of Darkness. As far as Blu-ray is concerned, there are 684 titles in release, with another 191 on the way. But apparently Samsung is predicting the demise of the hi-def format within five years, to be replaced by digital distribution services. We'll keep an eye on this one over the next five years and let you know.

Big Screen To Comic Books

Twentieth Century Fox executive is leaving movies for the pages of comic books. It looks like Jeff Katz, one of the key development people behind the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine film, is leaving the studio. Speculation is that Katz will continue his work with comic books. In addition to his film duties, which include last year’ Shoot ‘Em Up starring Clive Owen at New Line, Katz has been co-writing Booster Gold for DC Comics. No word yet on what his new project or projects will be.

The Whedon-verse

Joss Whedon fans, get ready for some good news and some bad news. Let's get the bad news over first. Just like the television show, the Firefly MMO has been cancelled. German developer Multiverse has ceased production on the game. But on the positive side, Multiverse will be begin production on another Joss Whedon franchise, Buffy The Vampire Slayer. An MMO based on Buffy will tie into the events of the comic and continue on from where the TV series left off. Man, Firefly was a great show, a great movie, but it just can't catch a break, can it? Incidentally, if you're a Whedon fan, you have to check out Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-Long blog at drhorrible.com. It features a lot of familiar faces.

Pretty soon you'll be able to talk to your PlayStation 3 and it might just understand you. Sony has announced a release date for the PS3 Bluetooth Headset. Niko, A Role Model

And now we bring you videogame news from a parallel dimension where everything is reversed and I have a goatee. Grand Theft Auto IV is being credited with inspiring a good deed. No, really. Following a wreck of the family jeep in rural Ilinois, an 11-year old girl helped pull her family clear of the vehicle, which had rolled over. The girl's mother told reporters that her daughter had learned from the game that a rolled over car is in danger of exploding, so she helped to get her family free of the overturned vehicle. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, and the jeep did not explode. The only question remaining, is why is an 11-year old playing GTA?
