Little Big PSP

If you’re like me, then you just love playing with your Sackboy at home. Now it looks like you might be able to do it on the bus or an airplane too. LittleBigPlanet developers Media Molecule have suggested that a PSP version of their quirky little game could be on the horizon. Co-Founder Mark Healey has said that quote “there’s definitely scope for a PSP version,” and that it would “be great to make.” Sony has also posted a job ad for a PSP Game Engine Lead to quote “work on the development of exciting new LittleBigPlanet projects.” Sounds interesting, but don’t get too excited, Mark Healey has also stated that there’s quote “nothing concrete at the moment.”

DLC IV

It looks like you’re going to have to wait a bit longer for that tender DLC for GTAIV. Take Two Chairman Strauss Zelnick has said the downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV might not be out until the second quarter of 2009. Zelnick also said that Take Two’s looking at a similar time to release Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the Nintendo DS. Next year? That should be just enough time to finish playing through the ridiculously long campaign of GTAIV.

iPhone Wars

Some former Microsoft game developers are sailing into iPhone territory. Paul and David Bettner, who were both on the Ensemble Studios team working on the new Halo Wars RTS, have formed their own company called NewToy. The brothers left Microsoft a few months ago because they believe the iPhone quote “has the potential to be as revolutionary to handheld gaming as the original Gameboy was.\" Since Ensemble is closing after the release of Halo Wars, it should be interesting to see if any more of their former colleagues follow suit.

You Be Soft

It looks like more and more MMOs are on the horizon. Ubisoft, the publishers of the popular Tom Clancy games, are planning to get into the lucrative MMO market. CEO Yves Guillemot said that the company’s recent buyout of World In Conflict developer Massive Entertainment is part of their plans to start developing MMOs. No specific details were given, except that their first MMO would be a quote “light” one similar to the kind popular in China. Ubisoft already announced that it would make a Tom Clancy MMO last March, but since they’re going for a lighter tone, maybe this means a Rayman Raving Rabbids MMO? We hope so.

HALO Probably Helped

The 360 is set to outsell the original Xbox two years ahead of schedule. Microsoft says they will have sold over 25 million 360s worldwide by the end of this month. It took 5 years for the original Xbox to sell that many consoles, and the 360 has been out for only 3. One big question that remains, are they including all the red ring of death replacements in those figures?

18% Solution

There’s even more good financial news for the game industry. It seems that despite recent economic turmoil, the sales of videogame hardware, software, and accessories have jumped more than 18% from the same time last year. That means a total of $1.3 Billion spent on gaming in just one month. That’s a lot of dough.

They spoil everything

Warning! Major spoilers, in the new ESRB ratings. In case you haven’t noticed, the ESRB’s website has started carrying descriptions of why a game’s rated the way it is. That’s pretty useful to parents and other sensitive people, but sometimes those descriptions go into spoiler territory. Take for example the descriptions for Fallout 3 and Resistance 2, they giveaway some plot details. Right now the descriptions only appear on ESRB.org, so let’s just hope they don’t make it onto the boxes.

All Sawed-Up

A young and fledgling game publisher has just closed it’s doors for good. Brash Entertainment, publisher of movie tie-ins like Space Chimps and Jumper: Griffin’s Story, have been forced to close their doors after failing to secure the necessary investments to stay afloat. Brash had a number of projects in the middle of development, including the Saw video game, which looks like it could be in limbo for the time being. We’ll keep you posted.

What would Zombies do?

Quantum Of Solace director Marc Forster has signed onto his next project. Fresh off the success of the new Bond film, Marc Forster will direct World War Z, a movie based on the zombie novel by Max Brooks. The screenplay will be written by J. Michael Straczynski of Babylon 5 fame, and will be produced by Brad Pitt’s company Plan B Entertainment. Can’t wait.
