John Johns

With Jim Lee providing the art for DC Universe Online, we didn’t think we could be any more excited about the game. How wrong we were. Sony Online has announced that they’ve recruited comic book writer Geoff Johns to pen the backstory for DCU Online. Johns has written for many books for DC over the years including Green Lantern, The Flash, Superman, and the Justice Society Of America. Johns has also written an upcoming episode of Smallville. Although Johns is only writing the backstory at the moment, he’s hinted that that the game might recreate legendary DC story arcs such as the Death of Superman. Now that’s authentic.

Single Spores Only

If you’ve been driving yourself crazy trying to figure out how to create multiple accounts for Spore so that everyone in your house can have their own critter, it’s time to give it up. Unfortunately, EA says it can’t be done, even though it says in the manual that you can create multiple Spore accounts. Apparently, that was a misprint and will be corrected in future editions. The Digital Rights Management software included in the game, that is the anti-piracy measures, only permit one account per serial number. That means if you want multiple accounts, you need to buy multiple copies of the game. Let’s hope they change that soon.

Hahahaha wipEpout

It’s the game where we “can’t drive 55” means 550. Sony has announced that their high-speed, sci-fi racer wipEout HD will hit the starting gates on September 25th. wipEout HD will be downloadable from the PlayStation Network and will fire 60 frames a second at you in full 1080p. As always, gamers race a series of space age vehicles at insane speeds through futuristic worlds. The game supports eight player online play, and even local splitscreen play for two players. There’s also SIXAXIS steering and trophies for those of you who need your bragging rights. Lookin’ good and for only 20 bucks it’s an awesome deal.

Symphony Of Destruction

I’ve been playing Rock Band for the past week and now they’re giving us a new album to rock out to. Harmonix has posted the rest of Megadeth’s 1986 seminal album Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying? The title track is already available in the game, but now the remaining seven songs such as I Ain’t Superstitious and My Last Words will be available for download. You can get them individually for 160 Microsoft points, or buy ‘em all for 880. This is the fourth full album available for the Rock Band games. “Whaddya mean I don’t support your system? I go to court when I have to.”

Call For Downloads

There’s even more downloadable content coming for the next instalment of Call Of Duty. COD5: World At War will feature three times the amount of downloadable content as well as premium content Activsion is calling Day One Advantage. While Treyarch is developing COD5, Infinity Ward, developers of COD4: Modern Warfare, has been confirmed by the publisher for Call Of Duty 6. It’s a great time to be a Call Of Duty fan.

Armed For Development

Three of the principle developers of Retro Studios are moving on. The former developers of the Metroid Prime series have move across town and opened their owned development house in Austin, Texas, known as Armature Studio. Additionally, the upstart has a long-term, exclusive publishing deal with Electronic Arts. I love the Metroid games and can’t wait to see what these guys come up with.

Building Vehicles

More news from the DC universe. We know all about the characters you can play in LEGO Batman, but how do they get around? Warner Bros. Interactive has just revealed the vehicles that will be appearing in LEGO Batman. Gamers will be able to take The Joker’s Copter and Killer Kroc’s Jet Ski for a spin, and of course you can also ride the streets of Gotham City in the Batmobile. Each vehicle has its own advantages, just like the playable characters. I’m such a big fan of Batman and the LEGO games, so I can hardly wait for this one.

Eidos Goes Mobile

Here’s a shocker that we didn’t expect to hear: Lara Croft under the Electronic Arts logo? No, there hasn’t been a buyout, but Eidos and Electronic Arts are partnering to bring several Eidos games to mobile phones. Under the deal, EA Mobile will distribute new mobile versions of two very big names: Tomb Raider Underworld and Just Cause 2. The deal also allows EA Mobile to release classic Eidos-owned titles California Games X and Minesweeper. If all goes well, we could see more Eidos games released for phones under EA Mobile.

Reconstructive Gaming

After scoring hits with remakes of Pac-Man and Galaga, Namco Bandai says that it may bring back more golden oldies. Namco Bandai team director Tadashi Iguchi has hinted that more remakes of old classics may be on the way, except that he doesn’t call them remakes, they’re “reconstructions.” Iguchi-san says he’d be interested to hear what children of the 80s would like to see in a game, though he wouldn’t reveal what the company is working on next. How about Dig Dug or Pole Position?

Digital Sequels

Can’t wait for the sequel films? Well, Marvel is offering up online comics that pick up where their summer blockbusters, Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, left off. The comics go live today exclusively on Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited. The comics will be published regularly on Wednesdays with at least three per month. Very cool.

The Last Man On Earth

Shia LaBeouf could be the last man on Earth. Eagle Eye director D.J. Caruso is working on turning Brian K. Vaughan\'s graphic novel, Y The Last Man, into a movie. Y takes place in a world where a plague has killed everyone with a Y chromosome except for one man, which kinda limits the ladies’ dating choices. Caruso says LeBeouf is his first choice to play Yorick, the titular character.

Comfortably Numb

Tragic news from the world of music. Richard Wright, one of the founding members of Pink Floyd, has died at the age 65. Wright died after a battle with cancer at his home surrounded by his family and friends. Wright met fellow Floyd Founders Roger Waters and Nick Mason in college and in 1965, formed Pink Floyd. Although Wright had a falling out with the band after making The Wall, he joined the band in 2005 for the Live 8 charity concert.

Lights In The Sky

Nine Inch Nails are raising the bar when it comes to concert performances. NIN has always been innovative when it comes to live shows as with their Live: With Teeth tour seen on the Beside You In Time DVD and Blu-ray. Now their latest tour, Lights In The Sky, features live, interactive, and rendered on the fly visuals for nearly half of the show. The show features more than 40 tonnes of lighting, stage rigging, hundreds of LED lights, three different video systems, a vast array of sensors, cameras, and both professional and custom built machinery to run it all. Helping to drive the all the interactive visual technology behind the tour is Canadian company, Moment Factory, who have also worked on Cirque du Soleil shows. Additionally, Trent Reznor has been talking with another Canadian, who’s very familiar with technology, Terminator 2 director James Cameron, about filming the show in 3D. Reznor is also in discussions with HBO about a miniseries for his Year Zero album. NIN will be back in Canada in mid November and early December, so if you have a chance to check out the show, you owe it to yourself to do so.
