GTA Xmas

A UK press release may have let slip when we’re finally going to see some downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV. The press release announced a price cut for the Xbox 360 in the UK. Not a big deal, except when describing some of the top games available for the 360, the press release mentioned GTA IV and that the 360 was quote “the only console with new Grand Theft Auto IV content available this Christmas.” Still no official word from Rockstar though, so take it with a grain of salt.

Cheaters Never Prosper

Enterprising players may have discovered an exploit to give themselves infinite cash. The discovery of an infinite money glitch in Fable II Pub Games, the package of money-producing minigames available on Xbox Live Arcade and as part of the pre-order, filled some players’ heads with visions of buying anything they want right off the bat. But Peter Molyneux is saying that the glitch was not an accident. Molyneux claims that anyone who has tried the money glitch might just be in for a surprise when they play Fable II, because the game will carry over consequences to Fable II when it’s released next month. Players can transfer the money they’ve accumulated playing Pub Games to Fable II or even debt, if they’re not so lucky. We’ll find out what Molyneux’s tantalizing clue means on October 21st. Not that I’d ever cheat. Oh no.

Broken Silence

There’s a new widget that keeps track of the doings in our favourite haunted town, Silent Hill. Konami has released what they’re calling an “interactive book” that lets you check out screenshots, videos, and news about the upcoming Silent Hill: Homecoming. There will also be journal entries from the game’s characters, such as Alex Shepherd, Elle Holloway, and Sheriff Wheeler. The widget can be added to Facebook, MySpace, iGoogle, or even a personal homepage. Silent Hill: Homecoming will be out for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on September 30th.

Virtual Terrorist Plot

It seems that spouses are not the only ones concerned about people spending too much time in the realm of World Of WarCraft. Dr. Dwight Toavs is a professor at the Pentagon’s National Defence University and says that virtual worlds, like World Of WarCraft, could be used to plan and hide real world terrorist plots. Among other things, in-game names, spells, and locations could be used to represent terrorist attacks. Let’s just hope their subscription runs out before they complete the plan.

You Break It, You Bought It

Don’t you hate it when you use a rocket launcher on a wooden door in a videogame and it doesn’t even show a scratch? Those days may be numbered. Pixelux Entertainment is the company behind the Digital Molecular Matter Engine, which lets any virtual object behave like its real-world counterpart. Star Wars The Force Unleashed is the first game to use the engine that allows next-gen games to include realistic destructible objects that never fall apart the same way twice. Glass breaks apart and shatters, wood splinters, and metal dents and bends. Pixelux will be announcing more partners and products in the near future.

Gaming Down Under

The Australian Film, Television, And Radio School’s videogame courses have a local contribution. John Buchanan, who’s the Chief Technical Officer of Relic Entertainment in Vancouver, the folks behind Company Of Heroes, helped develop the courses offered at the school. With many game developers taking root in Australia, such as Pandemic, 2K Australia, and Krome Studios it’s only fitting that the country train home grown talent as well.

Almost There

JJ Abrams highly anticipated Star Trek is almost finished. Well, at least according to executive producer Roberto Orci. Unfortunately, just what constitutes almost finished is quite unclear. However, Orci did say that the movie is essentially two films in one, in that this flick is a re-introduction for long time fans and a straight forward introduction to those new to the series. Additionally, the film tells a story that’s never been covered in the canon of the franchise. The film is slated for release next May.
