"I only have two criticisms about Soulcalibur IV, and both can be dismissed pretty quickly. The first is that although the game features Darth Vader, there's no Yoda yet (he's over on the 360 version). Of course, since Yoda's bound to be downloadable content sooner or later, this will probably cease to be an issue at some point. Second: the story that appears in the single player modes is goofy and text heavy (though props for starting Vader's story with "A long time ago..."). Of course, you don't play Soulcalibur for its story; you play it to kick ass. And in that sense, Soulcalibur IV is one mighty fine ass-kicking enabler.
The game has a great roster of extremely well animated characters, and if that's not enough you can create your own, customizing them with the many items you can buy and unlock. As before, the characters show amazing variety--some are slower and dish out massive damage, others are weaker but quick. The game is also friendly for a variety of skill levels. Weaker players can button mash on the easier modes, hardcore players can take on the harder difficulty or other players for a real change.
SC4 also comes with some smooth online play, which is bound to occupy a lot of your time. There's also a new single player mode, Tower of Souls, which provides more interesting challenges than the story mode. Soulcalibur IV is everything you wanted in a next-gen fighting game and remains BBB: Big, Beautiful and Balanced."
